The Science Behind Milk Thistle

Milk thistle (MT) is the most well-researched plant in the treatment of liver disease. Silymarin has been used to treat alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic viral hepatitis and toxin-induced liver diseases. A journal review states that Milk Thistle is able to increase cellular vitality and help protect against alcohol abuse.

Silymarin acts as an antioxidant by reducing free radical production and lipid peroxidation, has antifibrotic activity and may act as a toxin blockade agent.

A detailed scientific review states that hepatoprotective effects were observed in clinical studies in patients with alcoholic or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, including patients with cirrhosis.
