Lutein and zeaxanthin are important pigments produced by plants that give fruits and vegetables a yellow to reddish hue. Both these pigments are found in the retina of the eye as well. They act as a natural defense to sunlight damage. They protect the eyes from the harmful blue light emitted from various gadget screens like TV, monitors, mobile phones etc. They also act as antioxidants and scavenge the harmful free radicals in the eye

The Science Behind Lutein Zeaxanthin
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoid pigments that are absorbed and stored in the retina of the eye, hence also referred to as macular pigments. They are known to absorb the damaging blue light, improve visual acuity and scavenge harmful oxygen species.
Various studies have shown that supplementation with lutein/ zeaxanthin is effective in positively impacting the content and density of these pigments in the eye. The effect was seen in healthy adults as well as patients with age related macular degeneration (AMD).
A meta analysis shows that increased intake of Lutein/ Zeaxanthin may protect from late stage AMD.
A large survey study also shows that Lutein/ Zeaxanthin intake may reduce the occurrence of nuclear cataract.
