The Science Behind L-theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid found predominantly in green tea leaves. It has been been widely studied as a non drowsy relaxing agent in several scientific studies. In a human study, it was observed that oral intake of L-theanine could cause anti-stress effects via the inhibition of cortical neuron excitation. It was also observed in the same study that L-theanine intake resulted in a reduction in the heart rate (HR) and salivary immunoglobulin A (s-IgA) responses to an acute stress.

Another study provides support to the understanding that L Theanine promotes relaxation without causing drowsiness.

L-theanine in combination with caffeine was shown by another study to help in focusing attention during a demanding cognitive task.
