What is Lutein & Zeaxanthin?

Lutein and zeaxanthin are important pigments produced by plants that give fruits and vegetables a yellow to reddish hue. Both these pigments are found in the retina of the eye as well. They act as a natural defense to sunlight damage. They protect the eyes from the harmful blue light emitted from various gadget screens like TV, monitors, mobile phones etc. They also act as antioxidants and scavenge the harmful free radicals in the eye

Is it safe to consume Lutein Zeaxanthin supplements?

Lutein is generally safe and there are almost no side effects if it is consumed as per the suggested dose.

What are the key benefits of Lutein Zeaxanthin?

Lutein and Zeaxanthin constitute the main pigments found in the yellow spot of the human retina which protect the macula from damage by blue light, improve visual acuity and scavenge harmful reactive oxygen species. They have also been linked with reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.

Do Lutein Zeaxanthin supplements really work?

Various studies have shown that supplementation with lutein/ zeaxanthin is effective in positively impacting the content and density of these pigments in the eye. The effect was seen in healthy adults as well as patients with age related macular degeneration (AMD). 

A meta analysis shows that increased intake of Lutein/ Zeaxanthin may protect from late stage AMD. 

A large survey study also shows that Lutein/ Zeaxanthin intake may reduce the occurrence of nuclear cataract.
