What is Ashwagandha?

Withania somnifera, commonly known as “Ashwagandha” or “Indian ginseng” is an essential therapeutic plant of Indian subcontinent regions. It is regularly used, alone or in combination with other plants for the treatment of various illnesses in Indian Systems of Medicine over the period of 3,000 years.

Is it safe to consume Ashwagandha supplements?

Ashwagandha has been used for many centuries as a herbal remedy and the supplements are based on natural extracts. Hence, these are generally safe to consume. However, like all active ingredients, Ashwagandha may interfere with certain medications and must be taken after consultation with your doctor if you are under medication.

What are the Benefits of Ashwagandha?

Some of the key benefits of Ashwagandha are:

  • Improved muscle and cardio strength: Multiple studies show that Ashwagandha helps build cardiorespiratory strength. One such study was conducted to examine the possible effects of ashwagandha root extract consumption on muscle mass and strength in healthy young men engaged in resistance training. Compared to the placebo subjects, the group treated with ashwagandha had significantly greater increases in muscle strength on the bench-press exercise. Another study in elite athletes shows an increase in cardiorespiratory strength.

  • Adaptogenic effect/ Stress reducing properties: Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic Ayurvedic herb, has been often used to combat and reduce stress and thereby enhance general wellbeing. In a eight-week, prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the stress-relieving effect of Ashwagandha root extract was investigated in stressed healthy adults. It was concluded that Ashwagandha reduced stress and anxiety after eight weeks of monitoring.

Do Ashwagandha supplements work?

There is a ton of scientific evidence that proves effectiveness of Ashwagandha in clinical studies. Several studies conducted on human population show that this is an effective supplement to help build energy and reduce stress.
